English 2

Assignment 1 Part 1- TV Genre

a)  talk shows
b) drama series
c)  reality TV

Students should first decide on the genre they would like to attempt for this assignment and look through materials published on this genre to gain a better understanding of what it's all about. Then, they should start viewing the chosen television series again to work on the comparison and contrast essay.

Reflection
Through this assignment, I was able to compare and contrast two different reality TV in details. I chose to contrast the Reality TV " Who wants to be a millionaire " and "Guinness world records". I've done some online research and watched some episodes of the two reality TV, by doing these, I've enhanced my observation and listening skills to find out the difference and contrast them in my essay. In the end, I have also improved my grammar and vocabulary skills.

Assignment 1 Part 2- Paintings
In this project, our task is to prepare a long essay comparing  and contrasting two previous unseen paintings.
Our task is to go to one of the art exhibitions listed below, look at the paintings in the galleries/exhibitions assigned and study them.
a) No Talking Points
b) Bingkai Berangkai by Jalaini Abu Hassan
c) Figure Out

Through this project, students will be able to follow a structured method of critiquing an art work to
discover its substance and meaning. The structure for "reading a painting" involves four distinct
steps.
The students will DESCRIBE the artwork in terms of its literal content and artistic
elements.
The students will ANALYZE the artwork in terms of how the artist used the principles of
design to manipulate the content to provoke meaning.
The students will INTERPRET the work on the basis of what they have already discovered
about the work in the first two steps. They will consider not only the literal descriptions but
also the emotional content and the use of symbols and allegories to arrive at the message
or meaning in the work.
The students will make a JUDGMENT about the work's worth based on the information
they have gathered about the work. Judgments must be supported by what was learned
through the "reading" process as they apply to established criteria.
The work will be written up in a 1000-1200 word essay comparing the two chosen
paintings.
To cite references, if they have referred to any, according to the APA citation method
accurately and effectively.
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THIS ASSIGNMENT
To demonstrate the ability to ‘read’ a painting based on the steps listed below in the
methodology section.
To demonstrate the ability to compare/contrast, analyse and synthesize information about
the two chosen in a longer essay and explain them clearly and logically.
To communicate their ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.

Reflection
Through this assignment, I have improved my observation skill because we need to choose two paintings which have many similarities and differences so that we can write a compare and contrast essay about the paintings. I also understand better about the principles and elements of design in the painting while I'm writing the essay.
