Effective Public Communication

The module introduces and delves into the basic concepts and principles in the daily application of interpersonal and group communication skills both for personal and professional development. Course components include models and concepts within interpersonal, group and organizational communication such as perception, listening, group decision making, leadership and conflict.

Learning Outcomes

 Upon successful completion of the subject, I will be able to:            

1.Explain the concepts of communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and how people behave and communicate in different situations. 

2. Apply the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.

3. To demonstrate an ability to analyse and response to handling conflict as well as efficient negotiation skills in dealing with variety of individuals.

4. To be aware of the importance of cultural differences and respect cultural differences as well as to build healthy and positive relationships with fellow students, co-workers and clients.

Assignment 1:  Photo blog

The objectives of this project are as follows:

• To demonstrate the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.

The learning outcomes of this assignment are:

·      Apply the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.

• To be aware of the importance of cultural differences and respect cultural differences as well as to build healthy and positive relationships with fellow students, co-workers and clients.

·         To communicate the relevant ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.

This is a group work assignment and our task is to choose any locations of our choice. The locations can be from any popular spots in Malaysia or abroad. And what we need to do is to introduce the food, culture and architecture of the place that we chose. We have to take photos and write descriptions then put them on a blog. Lastly we have to do a presentation about what we have done. The place that we have chosen is Ipoh, Perak. We chose that place because it is one of our member's hometown and he can bring us to visit places of interests there. The photos that we focus on are 

a.       People        – ethnic background, gender, age, description of clothes.

b.       Food           – types of food available or food presentation at hawker stalls or restaurants.

c.       Activities     – kinds of activities found in the surrounding of the suggested location.

d.    Cultural conservation on buildings – Façade, interior and exterior design of the building and ornamentation.

Assignment 2: Oral Presentation

The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate the principles of communication and behavior in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.

The learning outcomes of this assignment are as follow: 
-Apply the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others, both at individual and at group levels.
-To be aware of the importance of cultural differences and respect cultural differences as well as to build healthy and positive relationships with fellow students, co-workers and clients.
- To communicate the relevant ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.
  

In this assignment, we are required to work as a small group and record a video as our oral presentation. The topic of this assignment is Traditional dwellings around the world. We have to choose one traditional house from any continents and describe the following: 

1. Historical background of the country.
2. Structure and layout.
3. Types of ornamentation used
4. Type of materials used.

The time limit for the video is 20 to 25 minutes per group. 

In my opinion, i think the toughest part of this assignment is to make good eye-contact with the audience who are going to watch the video. Besides, hand gestures are also very important because it will make the video more attractive. We also need to speak clearly to make sure the audience can listen and understand what we are presenting. A tripod stand for camera is also needed to record the video because people would not like to see the video if the camera keep shaking.

Assignment 3:  Comic Strip

The objectives of this project are as follows:

·    To communicate the relevant ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.

In this assignment, we are required to create a 3 A3 size comic strip which describes events related to

our daily life, special occasions and events in our campus.For my group, we decided to draw

comic about the process while we are doing our Culture and Civilization assignment. We actually

included concepts such as non-verbal communication, hand gestures and listening. After 

completing this assignment, I've learned how to communicate with the audience by drawing the 

comic which i think is very useful for me because I'm going to use a lot of drawings to 

communicate with others in my future. 

Overall Reflection: 

Upon the completion of this subject, I personally think that this is a very important and useful subject

because I've learned many ways of communications. There are a lot of methods to communicate with 

others and we need to use the right method on the right person ; on the right time ; and on the right place. 

We are involved in communication in our every day life, so it is very important for us to communicate

properly. Apart from that, I also learned how to communicate with people through the assignments that I've

done, I communicate with lecturer, teammates and the public while doing my assignments. Every 

assignments in this subject are group work, I have noticed that if it is a group work, teamwork is very 

important, we must distribute the tasks equally in order to produce high quality work.
